Face it - everyone is on social media nowadays. By some estimates, 3.1 billion people will be present on at least one social media platform by 2021. So, it comes as no surprise that companies have been shifting their focus towards social media marketing. This year was a year of many changes in how SMM is done - so let’s look at the Top 5 social media marketing trends of 2019.
Organic Reach is Diminishing
This isn’t something new, as it’s been happening for years, but it is now more important and visible than ever. Let's take Facebook as an example. As the social media giant continues growing, it’s prioritising paid reach vs organic reach. While this fact may not make many marketers happy, all is not lost. There are two main ways you can combat this pay-to-show phenomenon. Firstly, try and make quality content that your followers will engage with. Secondly, try and incorporate paid advertising into your social media as much as possible. With Facebook moving more and more towards monetisation of its network, the future will definitely be paid social media content.
Produce Quality Content
As we briefly mentioned earlier, if you’re running a tight budget, the best way to reach as many people as possible is to produce quality content. Even though Facebook’s algorithm gets changed regularly, you can’t go wrong with good content. They will always draw more reactions from your followers and bring in new ones as well. But, what exactly do we mean by quality content?
Video is the New Black
While the term "quality content" is very generic, a sure-fire way of getting high audience engagement rates is through video. Posts that contain video see 10x more engagement than those without and boosted posts with videos save more than 50% on cost-per-engagement. For this reason, video has been one of the most produced types of content by organisations in the past year. If you’re asking yourself why video is so engaging, the answer is much simpler than you think. In a time where most people have a very low attention span, watching something is much more engaging than reading about it. As humans, we’re visual creatures, so this trend should come as no surprise.
Short Videos Are On The Rise
As we mentioned in the previous part, video content is king. But, it’s a specific sort of video that’s been on the rise. Ever since the introduction of Snapchat (and subsequently Instagram Stories), almost every social platform has started to incorporate some sort of short video content. This is a very powerful tool because everyone has the time (and attention span) to look at a short video and take in a bite-sized piece of information. And it’s also a great way to advertise your products on social media!
Last but not least, speaking about video, we cannot not mention live streaming. It’s a great way to boost your audience engagement and interaction rates. This is because people can see what’s happening behind the scenes, they can more easily interact with you via Q&A's, thus giving them a more personal, human approach. If you’ve never live streamed, now is the time to put a face behind your social media posts!
These were our top 5 social media trends of 2019. There are many more that we didn’t get the chance to explain - guess we’ll just have to put them all in a short video or podcast!
